In addition, we have addressed issues in more than 40 other countries through outside-in analysis. To make sure we incorporate on-the-ground local country perspectives and not only a global viewpoint, we have built local offices in key emerging countries: Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, and Russia.

Brazil

SpataGiancarlo Spata heads our Brazilian office. He started working with Canback Dangel in 2007 and recently rejoined our firm. Most recently he worked for Grupo Itautec in finance. He is a graduate of Instituto Presbiteriano Mackenzie and holds CPA and CFA certificates.

In Brazil, our activities range from finding market opportunities for consumer goods to due diligence for acquisitions. Examples of work in Brazil:

  • Assessing the opportunity for a global food company to expand in the Brazilian cheese market

  • Evaluating the southern Brazil market attractiveness as part of a due diligence performed on a beverages company

  • Building a market entry strategy for a product that fights intestinal parasites

  • Performing due diligence on a large Brazilian brewer with a focus on revenue growth opportunities

  • Identifying opportunities for new types of snack food

Our work in Brazil is always done in tight collaboration with our Boston office.

China

Our Chinese activities are organized in Canback Dangel Liu under the leadership of Xingxing Liu in Beijing. Dr Liu has a long and distinguished career as a professor and consultant in China and the United States. He has been a professor at Beijing University and the Cadre College of Central Government and a consultant at Monitor Company. 10 years ago, he founded Beijing Wayland Consulting Company, out of which Canback Dangel Liu emanates.

LiuDr. Liu is an independent director on the boards of directors of a publicly-listed Chinese chemicals company and a mutual funds company. He is also an expert member of the evaluation commission of the Chinese SEC that oversees the granting of licenses to mutual fund companies.

In China, Canback Dangel often face issues related to regional prioritization. Out of 1,300 million people, around 30 million live a middle class or better life in urban areas (ABC+ class), and another 150 million are close to this standard of living (CD+ class). This creates a huge opportunity, but one that cannot be addressed with a national strategy. Instead, it is necessary to develop separate strategies for the Bohai (Beijing), Yangtze River Delta (Shanghai), Pearl River Delta (Guangzhou) super-regions, and occasionally for the Sichuan (Chengdu/Chongqing) inland region. Within these regions, there are again major differences depending on each city’s stage of development.

India

Canback Dangel’s India office fills a dual purpose:

  • Assisting our clients with analyzing market opportunities within India

  • Leading our global industry and market research activities

To kick off each of our projects, Aniket Pargaonkar and his team in Pune build a comprehensive “knowledge map” that catalogues all of the publicly available information on the issue under consideration. Aniket and his team also conduct similar research directly for our clients on a quick-turnaround basis. A typical example is a recent two week effort exploring the distribution of oral hygiene products in 6 countries.

Finally, our India office assists with the development and maintenance of some of our proprietary databases, such as the COAT database of cellular operators’ performance around the world.

Indonesia

PurnomoTeddy Purnomo heads our South East Asia practice. Teddy joined our Boston office in 2007 and returned to his native Indonesia in 2009. As a consultant in Boston, he worked on global beverage issues and designed and analyzed consumer surveys in China, the Philippines, Brazil and Mexico. He was also a member of the core team that created C-GIDD in 2008. As such, he intimately familiar with trends in the global economy.

Since his return  to Jakarta, he has continued to work with us on beverage issues and is also our leading expert on SE Asian retail trends. Recently, he spent 8 months traveling to almost all Indonesian provinces to understand distribution channels establish wholesaler networks. Teddy holds a BA from Washington University.

Kenya

Mark Wopicho

In East Africa, our activities are led by Mark Wopicho.
Mark is a graduate of Kenyatta University with a bachelor of science. Over the past few years he has worked in the energy sector. Starting in 2012, he joined Canback Dangel as a researcher with a focus on retailing and fast-moving consumer goods. He has also hosted our consultants from Boston when they travel to Nairobi.

Mexico

MacielFrancisco Maciel leads our Mexican office, assisted by José Miguel Viller. Mr Maciel is a former McKinsey consultant and investment banker with extensive experience in finance, telecom,Viller and consumer goods. Over the years, he has served some of Mexico’s and Central America’s largest companies on market development and financing issues. He has also been Dean of the Master of Finance program at Universidad Anahuac. Mr Viller has served major companies in his native Venezuela and in Mexico on market development projects.

Mexico is an all-important market for many American companies. Its size and proximity, combined with the growing Hispanic community in the US makes success in Mexico imperative. We work together with US companies to create effective marketing programs that resonate with consumers in Mexico . Further, we serve several Mexican companies locally.
